Greensboro, N.C., USA, March 3, 2010 —Local resident Henry Germann recently made a difference in the fight against hunger for his Ohio community, winning a $500 donation to his local food bank of choice at the 2010 National No-Tillage Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Germann, of Delphos, Ohio, won the drawing and chose to donate the money to the West Ohio Food Bank in Lima, Ohio.

“It felt good,” said Germann of winning the donation. “I’ve hardly ever won anything in my life and then to win this—it was a pleasant feeling.”

Germann, a full-time farmer who grows wheat, corn and soybeans, also mentioned the importance of agricultural companies getting involved on the local level.

“I think it’s very good that Syngenta is giving back to the local community,” he said. “As the population increases it’s important for companies like Syngenta to make sure there’s an adequate food supply for everyone.”

The donation is part of Weeding out Hunger, a new campaign sponsored by Halex GT corn herbicide and Syngenta in effort to fight hunger across the Corn Belt.

Currently, more than 49 million Americans, one in six people¹, are food insecure, meaning they have limited access to adequate food due to a lack of resources. Syngenta is working hard to combat these alarming statistics and support those in need. The Weeding out Hunger road show will be stopping at various industry events and retailers throughout the Corn Belt in spring 2010 to collect non-perishable food items for local food banks.

Along with the Weeding out Hunger events, a portion of Halex GT product sales in 2010 will go toward feeding those in need*. Halex GT herbicide is Glyphosate with Residual™, and provides a more agronomic and higher-yielding alternative to other post-emergence glyphosate herbicides.

By working with Feeding America®, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, Syngenta and Halex GT are thinking globally and acting locally to help Weed out Hunger one crop row at a time. Feeding America supports approximately 63,000 local charitable agencies, which provide food directly to more than 25 million people in need.
