Syngenta honors California employee with annual corporate leadership tribute Annual tribute memorializes former employee’s exemplary character, leadership Hearn’s nomination emphasizes passion, commitment to teamwork Syngenta donates $500 to breast cancer awareness in Hearn’s honor Greensboro, NC, USA – Syngenta Crop Protection today announced that Lou Hearn of Visalia, Calif., received the 2009 Shon Award. Syngenta presents the award each year to one of its employees in recognition of hard work and dedication to the industry while carrying out his or her duties with a friendly and positive disposition. Hearn has been with Syngenta for more than 30 years and serves as the technical service representative for the Southern California district. In addition to his work at Syngenta, he serves on the research committee of the California Garlic and Onion Research Board. Hearn’s colleagues nominated him for the award because of his positive attitude, enthusiasm and unselfishness. Upon assuming the role of technical service representative in Southern California, Hearn’s emphasis on teamwork, unfailing passion for his career and bottomless expertise became noticeable attributes of his success. Colleagues say that Hearn’s personal and professional balance is second-to-none, which makes him a very respected and trusted coworker and friend. Established in 2004 in memory of employee Dan Shon, the award honors Shon’s many exemplary attributes, including his positive attitude, passion, teamwork, leadership, innovation, willingness to help and commitment to a healthy balance of professional and personal life. With a goal of instilling and nurturing these behaviors, Syngenta gives the award annually to an employee of the horticulture business unit who best exemplifies Shon’s characteristics. Shon, a 14-year Syngenta employee and resident of Davis, Calif., died in 2003. “The qualities that Dan possessed are at the core of Syngenta and its operations,” said Eric Kuhn, NAFTA project manager. “Honoring a member of our team each year in the spirit of Dan’s characteristics reiterates what greases our wheels to success. Lou goes beyond expectations to better Syngenta and his coworkers as Dan did. Dan has set a very high bar in character and work ethic and it’s rewarding to the company that so many of its employees, like Lou and other previous recipients - Ric Wesselman, Molly Matchell, David Laird, Ray Lea, Gary Sawyer and Duane Hobbs, strive to meet that standard.” Eric Kuhn, Vern Hawkins, president of Syngenta Crop Protection, and Scott Langkamp, head of horticulture, honored Hearn with the award February 8 at the U.S. headquarters in Greensboro, N.C. Syngenta will make a donation of $500 to Hearn’s choice of cause, breast cancer awareness.
